A couple of years ago I had a conversation about depression and antidepressants with a neuro-psychologist. He believed that depression could be cured within 18 months of treatment. After 18 months, one should either look within the body for another cause of the depression or research another type of treatment, which I completely agree with.

 

Many of my clients who are dealing with depression have sought out my services because they have been in treatment for many years, some for the majority of their life. They are searching for a different approach to treating their depression. The majority of these clients are already working with their doctors to reduce their prescription medication and I work with both the doctor and the client to support this process.

 

Antidepressants are widely prescribed medications that are being given to people for far too long.  The medication eventually stops working and then the doctor prescribes either another antidepressant or another kind of drug to support the first antidepressant.  During this time, patients can develop other collateral damage from all the medication they may be taking on a continual basis.

 

If you or a loved one have been on this type of a treatment cycle, it can be devastating. Depression doesn’t go away but emotions and your health can also be at risk.  People diagnosed with depression get tired of being called depressed or worse, they begin to believe that will always be depressed. Many are afraid to ask their doctor to reduce their medications as they can be insecure and feel that everything is an effort requiring a lot of energy that they don’t have. Eventually they decide to take control of themselves and their lives and make a decision to try a different form of treatment.

Quinoa Kale Avocado Meal

Quinoa Kale Avocado Meal

Ingredients:

1 cup uncooked quinoa

2 cups water

Pinch of Himalayan salt

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Zest from 1 medium lemon

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Fresh cracked black pepper,

3 cups chopped kale

1 large avocado

 

How to Make It:

Combine the quinoa, water in a medium saucepan. Bring the water to a boil, and after the water begins to boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the pan.

Gently simmer, covered, for 15 minutes (there may still be some water not yet absorbed). Remove from heat.

Keeping the pan covered, let it stand for 5 minutes, or until the remaining water is absorbed.

Remove the lid and gently fluff the quinoa. Set aside to cool.

In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon zest, lemon juice, mustard, salt and pepper. Set aside.

In a large bowl, toss together the cooked quinoa, kale and avocado. Toss with the dressing, and serve at room temperature or chilled.

Salmon in Papillot

Ingredients:

  • 4 pieces of Salmon
  • 6 garlic cloves
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 1/2 onion
  • lemon
  • Thyme
  • Salt
  • Olive oil
  • Parchment paper

 

  1. Turn the oven on at 325 degrees.
  2. Finely chop all the veggies.
  3. On a large piece or parchment paper, place one piece of salmon in the center and season with salt. Spread chopped veggies on top of the salmon. Add thyme and squeeze half of a lemon.
  4. Wrap the paper as a present, make sure the ends are strongly wrapped.
  5. Place packages on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully open the packages, as the steam is hot!

We have all heard how damaging sugar is for us and our body.  We all know someone that has healthy problems due to sugar such as the popular diabetes and all the problems that come along with it.

Often what we don’t hear is how damaging is eating things that are sweet with calorie 0 or light or diet. We calm down our sweet tooth without the sugar intake so we believe we stay safe and remain healthy because we are sure what really causes health problems is “only sugar”.

I am sorry to pop your sweet bubble. To your body or better pancreas, sugar is sugar or sweet is sweet and the chemical reaction that you body releases when you have any kind of sugar/sweet intake is exactly the same in either case so are the health problems that can cause.

When you eat or drink anything that is sweet your pancreas releases insulin and fat to battle the sugar content in blood to protect you from becoming a diabetic.

The real problem happens when our pancreas releases insulin too often because your are eating sweet things or things that become sugar in your body throughout the day.

At some point your body becomes insulin resistant and fat, then the body loses its capacity to balance itself and go back to plato after every insulin release if that happens so many times through the day, everyday we can become diabetic, overweight along with all the side effects that come along with all those two diseases.

Since sugar/sweeteners are so highly addictive for our brain it turns out that is really difficult to quit sugar all at once but not impossible. There is a very successful technic that you can use to start your freeway to sugar addiction. Instead of restricting it, add things into your diet that will trick your brain into craving less by adding sweet vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, herbal teas. Also one or two pieces of fruit throughout the day can help in the beginning. Drink lots of water and have a piece of dark chocolate a day 70% cacao minimum when the craving is really kicking in.
