Morning Routines Are Made To Be Broken

I Truly Believe In Morning Routines

May 02, 2019

Good morning!

I’m walking downtown, in San Luis Obispo. Walking is one of my morning routines. It’s a recently added one, and I really, really enjoy it. It’s early in the morning. There is barely any traffic. Nobody’s on the street, it just relaxes me and makes me feel like I can do this little bit of activity and cardio that my heart and my body enjoys in the morning. So I don’t go from laying down in bed, to sitting up in a desk or sitting up in a table to have breakfast at work.

So, what are your morning routines?

No Routine Morning Routine!

No Routine Morning Routine!

May 01, 2019

Good Afternoon!

I’m going to talk to you about another morning routine. Another morning routine today is the possibility of not getting a chance to have a morning routine, like today. Today I had to leave the house really early as I had things going on, conference calls and meetings all morning until now. I didn’t get a chance to stop one second to talk to you guys, but this is how it works sometimes. It’s not always perfect and that’s also good.

I will be back with another morning routine, bye bye!

Time to Get Back on Track!

Time to Get Back on Track!

Dec 27, 2018

Have you ever counted how much time it takes for you to get “back on track” after the holiday season? One day, one week or a whole month?

Some people adjust really quickly and are able to go right back to their everyday routines. For others, it takes what seems like forever. Everyone is very different.  Have you ever thought this could be related to your brain functionality?

The cingulate system is the line between the two brains. This line is responsible for managing our ability to shift attention, makes us more adaptable, more flexible or more able to “go with the flow”.

When the cingulate system is too active, we have problems in shifting our activities or habits, and when it is calmer, it’s much easier for us to “go with the flow”.

The cingulate system is the one you want to nourish if you want the ability to adjust faster to new situations. This also applies to returning to our normal routines once the holidays are over.  After a month spend juggling meals, visiting with friends and family and setting the kids up for school again, I look forward to returning to our normal routine.

If you find that you have this problem at the beginning of the new and/or are not able to adapt to the new things coming on your way, it might be a sign of your cingulate system being too active.

How do we calm down our cingulate system?

Here are a few suggestions of ways to do that:

  • Meditation
  • Do things you love to do and enjoy
  • Think your answers before spitting a NO!

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the holiday season, but it’s important to keep your goals in sight. If you are trying to get back on track now that the holidays are over, think about your cingulate system first. Take some time for yourself to calm your brain so that you can achieve the health you desire. Happy New Year 2019!

The Holiday Season is Here!

The Holiday Season is Here!

Nov 28, 2018

December is upon us, the last month of 2018.  It is usually the time that we look back and take inventory of the past year, acknowledge our achievements as well as identify the things that we could have done better and set our goals for the new year.

When you look back over 2018, how do you feel about the year as a whole? What, if anything, would you have done differently?

The good news is that with the start of a new year, you get another chance to re-do the things that didn’t go so well in 2018.  If one of your 2018 goals was to lose weight or get into better shape, you can start again!

Think of losing weight and getting leaner as a marathon, not a sprint race. The more steadily you lose excess weight, the longer it will last. Why? The reason is very simple. Our brain needs time to make changes and to create and develop new neuropathways that will stick forever. When we make small changes, one at the time, it is easier to stick with this new habit on a daily basis.  When we make a big change in our habits without repeating it daily, it is usually not something that we stick with for the long term. Small changes in our habits are more attainable for our brain. So if you haven’t achieved the weight you desired during 2018, don’t worry, let’s do it again in 2019!

During this holiday season, we gather around the table more often than not. Food is fun and enjoyable as long as you avoid going overboard eating more than we should. Here are some suggestions to help maintain your current weight during the holiday season:

  • Drink more water than usual, 8 to 10 cups a day.
  • Make sure you drink two cups of water 20 minutes before sitting around the table to eat
  • Go for walks with the people you are feasting with.
  • Be mindful of portion control. Our stomachs have a limited capacity, usually less than two full plates of food.
  • Try everything that is being served to you but eat only a couple of bites of each. You don’t need to finish everything on your plate. In fact, in some cultures, clearing your plate is considered rude.

Try to practice these simple and easy suggestions to make your holidays full of enjoyment!

P.S.: One more suggestion! There is no portion control for love. Love your kids, spouses, partners, friends, parents and co-workers as much as you want. There is an unlimited feast for love, not only during the holidays, but all throughout the year!

The Daily Rituals of the Healthiest, Most Attractive People in the World

The Daily Rituals of the Healthiest, Most Attractive People in the World

Jun 04, 2018

When we have a conversation about our personal habits the most of the time we don’t even know what happens in our brain or our body for that habit to be created and how that specific thing that we do in our daily basis became a habit one day .

When we do something repeatedly it is a habit. A habit can be a routine or not, what’s the difference between those two?

A habit can be something that works for us in a specific situation and that becomes a routine that can be a healthy or unhealthy routine.  Also, it can be something that we do when we get triggered and it has an emotional attachment for us, usually unhealthy.

Either way, we want to be aware of the chance that the habit serves us in a healthy way or unhealthy way.

A good example of a healthy habit/routine is to get 8 hours of sleep at night. We created a routine because that serves us by providing more hours of rest and makes us feel better the next day.

We create habits of everything and often are unhealthy such as having one or two glasses of wine before dinner every night because we need it to unwind. This habit doesn’t serve you in any way but in your mind it becomes natural and you do it without even thinking.

For that to happen in both cases a wire was created in your brain one day and got reinforced by repeating the same thing daily for a period of time and that created a habit, healthy or unhealthy.

Probably you have heard the word “wire” when talking about habits, if not here it comes a simple explanation that will clarify that for you.

A wire gets created in our brain with a series of small decisions (thoughts) that we make in a very short period of time to take action. For that action to happen our brain uses a very specific neuron called neurotransmitter and we need a whole bunch of them for that action to become real.

To change an unhealthy habit we need to create a new wire that tells us otherwise and reinforce daily to become the new wire until the old one fades away and the new routine becomes natural for us, a no brainer.
