If It Tastes Sweet…

It means it’s sugar.

Sugar means something different for every one of our organs. They are each affected differently, depending on the job of the organ. The pancreas, for one, will be affected directly, every time you consume sugar or sweeteners.

Let’s talk about the pancreas since it is the organ in charge of monitoring your sugar levels. Every time we consume anything that is sweet, (containing natural sugar or sweeteners), such as honey, maple syrup, brown rice, syrup, agave and even fruit or

artificial sweeteners as well such as aspartame, xylitol, mannitol,

our pancreas goes to work to screen for sugar in our blood. Every time we eat something that tastes sweet, our pancreas does two things, it will release insulin and fat.

It will react based on the amount of sugar it finds. If we have more sugar in our blood, the pancreas will release increased insulin and fat.  We are talking about the insulin and fat that makes healthy people become pre-diabetic and diabetic.

Processed food is what has turned diabetes and obesity into a pandemic in our society. Artificial sweeteners are in every processed food, junk food and soft drink.   These high concentrations exist even in every zero calorie drinks and low calorie foods. The most popular is aspartame. Aspartame, which is forbidden in Europe for causing cancer and Alzheimer’s, is still openly used by fast food chains, soft drinks companies, and processed food factories in the United States. What the big corporations that manufacture zero calorie drinks don’t tell you is that your pancreas will still release fat and insulin and that will become body fat which will turn you into an ill person. Obesity, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes are strictly related to your intake of sweets, changing your life forever.

Please think about this before you eat a second piece of candy.

Nothing Good Comes From Eating Sugar!

There are no benefits of eating sugar in any form – white, brown or powdered. There is only the possibility of addiction and health problems.

Sugar affects everything in our bodies. Not only does it affect our liver, pancreas, and gut, it also affects the functionality of our brain and the reasoning of our mind in a major way.

Our health and behavior change noticeably when we eat sugar in smaller or larger amounts than usual. This is very clear in children’s behavior when they are in a sugar high.

70% of the population in the United States suffers or will suffer from diabetes due to sugar consumption at some point in their life.

The distinction is that most of these people will suffer diabetes not only for sugar consumption from sweets, but also from the chemical sweeteners that are added to soft drinks and fast food.

There is a widespread belief  that fast food is cheaper than other foods and in some ways it is,  but if people bought produce and beans instead of junk food and ate them over time, this would be a less expensive and healthier option that makes a difference in their health over the long run, wouldn’t it?

Big chains and big pharmaceutical companies,  and big corporations are interested in keeping the population ignorant with numb brains that keep the wheels of their money making machines running at full speed. If you haven’t seen it, Jamie Oliver has done a lot of work to increase awareness in his work to Teach Every Child About Food.

It is every individual’s responsibility to do our best for our own health, educating ourselves and our community of the problems that sugar consumption can cause in our overall health. This is the Dynamic Nutrition Specialist mission in life, it’s to educate people on how to address their unhealthy behaviors one at the time.

5 False Beliefs About A Cleanse

5 False Beliefs About A Cleanse

Feb 29, 2020

Hi Everyone,

My name is Emily and I need to share this experience with you.

So, when I told people in my life that I was going to do a cleanse, many eyebrows lifted.  Some of the first reactions to hearing about a cleanse were frightening and acutely misinformed, and so, because of this, I decided to write about my cleanse. Also, to address some of the misconceptions about the process!

Let’s break down some of the top 5 misunderstandings about this cleanse.  Keep in mind, this doesn’t apply to all plans and remedies that are out there, but the guided, safe routine 10-day cleanse outlined by Nourish the Brain Institute.

Number One: Going to the bathroom.  This has got to win first place for the number of comments I heard when discussing the cleanse.  It is not true that being on a specific diet causes one to ‘clear their bowels’ in a rapid, unpredictable, radical way. Do people really do this type of thing to themselves?! My experience was quite neutral in fact, and here is why. The cleanse does not replace all foods with a liquid diet or an extreme increase in any one herb, or element.  I ate a specific vegetarian diet of delicious steamed or stir-fried veggies, which, as you can imagine, really supported regularity!

Number Two:  Hmm. Perhaps the last one should have been listed as number two. Oh well. Let’s talk about feeling hungry.  No one likes that, right? I have never been successful on a restricted diet. Those types of plans fail because they tell our brain that we are suffering, which in turn creates more feelings of hunger, stress, and a sense of urgency to eat more when we finally get the chance to.  This doesn’t happen on the cleanse and here is why. You can eat an entire avocado and a delicious apple any way you want each day. The cleanse also allows you unlimited amounts of cucumber and celery, all throughout the day as well. The high-fiber, vitamins and minerals are digested slowly by your body, allowing you to continue to feel satisfied.  There are also amazing shakes as part of the daily routine. As it turns out, you never go more than a couple of hours without a treat.

Number Three: Fatigue. Won’t I be lacking in energy without all my pasta, bread, and other sources of protein? In short, Not really. Along with the daily plan of veggies, and the shakes, there are protein supplements, tablets, that are taken 2 times a day. Your body is not deprived of anything that it needs to function as it has been designed to. Now hold on, should you go and run a 5K during your cleanse? Should you cleanse in the week of your sister’s wedding? Yeah, don’t do that.

Number Four:  Mindset. The cleanse is intended to reset your body, back to optimum health.  The process, for me at least, required some thoughtful rest during days 3 and 4.  I had to give myself a pass on stressful events, physical, mental and emotional. The tradeoff of experiencing the first few days of the transition is that I began to think more clearly, sleep better, and experienced an overall euphoria that proved the cleanse was making a difference.  Most of all, by days 7 – 10, the sense of accomplishment was growing rapidly. This even continued well after the cleanse was over, and reason five will help me say more…

Number Five: Weight Loss  Our bodies carry extra weight because we store toxins, fats, and sugars that are introduced into our system.  Through the cleanse, we remove the addition of these unneeded ‘food additives’ and show our body that pure health is possible.  I started losing a pound, maybe a little less, each couple of days. Everyone’s body is going to change in its own way. Here’s the surprising thing though.  After I stopped the cleanse I continued to lose 3 – 4 more pounds over the next month, which I thought was pretty cool!

Do you have specific questions about the NTBI cleanse that I haven’t answered here?

Send an email to emily@nourishthebrain.com or use the form below to submit your question directly to me about the 10-Day Cleanse. I would LOVE to help you understand the process, and help you decide when you want to try it.  By sharing your feedback below, we would like to give you $5.00 off our Online Mini-Course on Food Labels.  What a treat!

I am definitely planning to cleanse again and to repeat about every six months because I simply love its rejuvenating effects.  Do I eat vegetarian, inflammation-free all the time? Absolutely not. I love wine, cheese, burgers and yes, even the occasional bacon. I haven’t craved coffee, cocktails, cookies in quite the same way I did before the cleanse.  You might say, I have begun to retrain my brain. Gemi, of course, can explain all of these radical realizations that I have had, of course! If you haven’t taken advantage of the free consultation, you should really wake up to that.

Are You Thinking About How a Cleanse Would Work in Your Life?

What I believe is that we all should get to eat what we want in life, within limits.  The cleanse is truly a reminder of how we physically and mentally were designed to function, and I take comfort in knowing that I know how to find that place, through the NTBI cleanse.

My friend eats garbage (junk food) How can I talk to them?

My friend eats garbage (junk food) How can I talk to them?

Dec 01, 2019

I don’t like telling people how to live, just because I have a different set of guidelines for my own nutrition. What happens? The person only is able to filter the message that they are doing something WRONG!  They shut off from new information and that is that. Here are some ideas for opening up conversations about healthy food choices.

Start with a question, invite them to reflect:

It seems like you really like that _____, what about it do you like so much?  Wait for them to answer…

A)  If they reveal that they have guilt, and you should follow up with asking why they eat it if they know it is not healthy.

B)  If they show that they haven’t thought about it, showing a lack of awareness, your next move is to ask if they have ever wondered what that food contains, or why it is your ‘go to’ choice?

Would you like to eat differently?

Would you like to do better?

Awareness is everything.  When you know what is causing people, including yourself, to make certain food choices, you realize that you may not have been using the control you have over your own health.

Consider meeting with me for a consultation.  We can start discussing your goals and habits in order to get you on track to your best and most confident self.

I wish you the best,

Sugar is Everywhere

Sugar is Everywhere

Oct 07, 2019

There is a reason for that, your brain runs out of connections that allow you to take action after the first thought, “I shouldn’t be eating this.” Sugar disables the neurotransmitters in your brain, making it nearly impossible to quit sugar developing addictive behaviors towards this food with no nutritional value or goodness of any sort.

Know where corporations put their sugar to hook you into buying their specific brand. Savor the knowledge that you can read labels, and recognize how the sugar has been hidden, calling it different names with the only intention of tricking you. Why do you think you buy a specific thing and not another one which apparently is the same? The reason is the sugars and monosodium glutamates (MSG) used into this specific brand are designed to confuse your brain into an addiction to their specific brand. They should be prosecuted for this reason, right!?

Greetings my friends!

There are many new things that have been developing at Nourish the Brain over the past month.  I’d like to talk to you about new workshops, group sessions, and of course, our new office location.

I challenge you to choose a new way to get healthy, with Nourish the Brain Institute.  There is always something great, no matter how small it may seem, for us to improve our daily actions in a positive way.

Check out our upcoming Workshop and Online Mini-Course

Sign up for a Webinar  to freshen up your awareness of nutritional basics

Workshops are happening monthly, here at our beautiful new office space.  Come and spend an hour with us to discuss the best ways to increase your health in body, mind and of course, your brain.  We went ahead and added a twist, this season we have created an online mini-course for you to learn at home, at your own pace.  There are 4 simple and easy lessons to complete when you join Gemi in the kitchen and discover what foods can earn their place in your home.  I invite you to take a closer look at what you are routinely eating and establish a few guidelines.

Webinars are another simple way to listen in on something you might have already heard before from Gemi, but it bears repeating.  Gemi walks us through the role of fats, sugar, and inflammatory foods and how they are constantly affecting our organs and nervous system.  Invite a friend who may be struggling with stress, fatigue, and other negative feelings, but might not be aware of their cause.

Well, the beans were already spilled.  We have moved locations, conveniently downtown in San Luis Obispo.  Right above Takkens Shoe Store, we are so thrilled about this open and refreshing new atmosphere.  We would love to see you here to have a chat about your health, during a FREE health reset, or a workshop, or our new group series classes that will be announced soon.

Fresh news always feels so good to announce.  I hope to hear from you soon and that you are taking great care of yourself.  Thank you for being a part of our Nourish the Brain Community and with sincerity, I wish you good health.

Meal Prep To Skip Unhealthy Choices

Meal Prep To Skip Unhealthy Choices

May 12, 2019

Good morning everybody. Happy Monday!

Do you have a specific habit for meal prep through the week?

I always recommend to my clients, and myself, to meal prep during the weekend. It’s very simple, it makes life easier, and if you have food ready for the whole week, it will be less likely that you make a poor choice about eating something unhealthy, fast and quick.

What I recommend is going shopping Saturday or Sunday, or the day that you have off, and right after shopping drop your things in the kitchen and meal prep right then and there. Don’t wait, don’t put things in the refrigerator, because it’s less likely that you will feel inspired to do it. So right after shopping is the best time to do it.

I hope this tip helps you, and I hope you create a new healthy habit!

N E W Opportunity in Your Future With Nourish the Brain Institute

N E W Opportunity in Your Future With Nourish the Brain Institute

Apr 03, 2019

It’s been an incredibly busy time at Nourish the Brain Institute.  The launching of the new program Dynamic Nutrition Specialist is something I’ve been looking forward to for the last six months as our team has been working to build it from the ground up.

From script writing to filming, to the addition of new team members and website features, there is so much to celebrate!

It all started when I had an idea, that I could not have developed fully without the use of my higher faculties.

One day my mentor, Bob Proctor, helped to realize the importance for the world what I do and how that can help many in the world.

“It would be selfish to keep it for yourself, it is your soul calling, you have to educate people about the importance of what you do, how that can heal their brain, body, and mind.”

That phrase took me totally out of my comfort zone but didn’t matter whatever would take I was going to do it and I did it.   I have created the Dynamic Nutrition Specialist Certification program to give people the same opportunity I had. The possibility to heal themselves at the same time they learn the communion between the brain and the mind and how our body reacts with every food we put in our mouth all while they make a business when they graduate.

Today, I have the pleasure to present to you my life long learning experience.

The Holiday Season is Here!

The Holiday Season is Here!

Nov 28, 2018

December is upon us, the last month of 2018.  It is usually the time that we look back and take inventory of the past year, acknowledge our achievements as well as identify the things that we could have done better and set our goals for the new year.

When you look back over 2018, how do you feel about the year as a whole? What, if anything, would you have done differently?

The good news is that with the start of a new year, you get another chance to re-do the things that didn’t go so well in 2018.  If one of your 2018 goals was to lose weight or get into better shape, you can start again!

Think of losing weight and getting leaner as a marathon, not a sprint race. The more steadily you lose excess weight, the longer it will last. Why? The reason is very simple. Our brain needs time to make changes and to create and develop new neuropathways that will stick forever. When we make small changes, one at the time, it is easier to stick with this new habit on a daily basis.  When we make a big change in our habits without repeating it daily, it is usually not something that we stick with for the long term. Small changes in our habits are more attainable for our brain. So if you haven’t achieved the weight you desired during 2018, don’t worry, let’s do it again in 2019!

During this holiday season, we gather around the table more often than not. Food is fun and enjoyable as long as you avoid going overboard eating more than we should. Here are some suggestions to help maintain your current weight during the holiday season:

  • Drink more water than usual, 8 to 10 cups a day.
  • Make sure you drink two cups of water 20 minutes before sitting around the table to eat
  • Go for walks with the people you are feasting with.
  • Be mindful of portion control. Our stomachs have a limited capacity, usually less than two full plates of food.
  • Try everything that is being served to you but eat only a couple of bites of each. You don’t need to finish everything on your plate. In fact, in some cultures, clearing your plate is considered rude.

Try to practice these simple and easy suggestions to make your holidays full of enjoyment!

P.S.: One more suggestion! There is no portion control for love. Love your kids, spouses, partners, friends, parents and co-workers as much as you want. There is an unlimited feast for love, not only during the holidays, but all throughout the year!
