What Matters to You

We all sometimes feel like the last kid on the block. Everybody goes before us and when it is time to take care of ourselves we feel we don’t have the energy anymore. Does it sound familiar to you? It happened to me!

Not anymore though. One of the most valuable things I learned is the fact that life will happen all the time, bad things, good things, normal things, boring things, life will keep happening always.  What matters the most is how you react towards those things and what you do with the hand that has been dealt to you.

If you want to live a more fulfilling life, a healthy and long life, you want to stop yourself before you complain when something challenging happens to you.

I used to complain about all sorts of things that happened to me. Today, I am grateful for those things that have made me the person I am today, a happy one!

Problems come, illness comes, this pandemic comes…there is nothing we can do when these issues sneak into our lives.

The one thing we can do is to see there is a learning opportunity for us in every hiccup in life. It only matters what you do with it and remember –

You can do, be and have anything you want in life.

Why not be happy today, just today!!

Thought with Action

Thinking happens naturally and automatically. Taking action, on the other hand, is a totally different business. How many times have you had an idea and never followed through?

In order to make things happen you need 3 things:

  • Have an idea
  • Make a committed decision
  • Take consistent action

Forget about the How and the When, if you take consistent action it will happen, yes or yes. Often we get wrapped up with the daily routines of work and “busy”-ness, and this doesn’t allow room for creativity. We go, go, go, and then one day we realize we have been living a life that is not fulfilling. I know because I did that for so many years!!!

I thought I loved what I was doing, I thought I was mildly happy, I thought my relationships were okay, until the day I thought everything in my life wasn’t good enough and I decided to live a fulfilling life. My next dilemma was, how was I going to do it?

It took a lot of courage to leave a pretty successful career, leave my country, and leave my loved ones to change my life, to do always and only what I wanted to do.

Throughout my life, I have changed my life several times.

When I felt my life wasn’t good enough, I changed it, I decided I wasn’t going to live a mediocre life. I didn’t want my children to learn to live a mediocre life, I wanted them to be happy, fulfilled in all areas and teach them to go for it, to do whatever it takes to achieve happiness in all areas, at least to always try it!

I am not perfect, my children are not perfect, but I won’t resign to being okay ever anymore, I did it and I didn’t like it. Taking consistent action in my life is a norm, I do it everyday in everything I do, because not doing it is not good enough.

Today when someone asks me, How is your day going? I can say, my day is going great, every day is a great day even when things don’t work out, still I see the good.

Take action every day to have the life you want to have, that brings you happiness.

When Dreams Become More

The word “dream” implies positivity, good feelings, forward-thinking, and wanting more out of life. The question is, why are we taught not to “dream”?  Are we made to believe that dreams don’t come true?

The dream is a state of mind, whether we are awake or asleep. We call it a dream when it is involuntary or a visualization when it is voluntary. Our conscience gives us the powers of thought and choice, neither of which can happen all the time. We are always thinking, and choosing, constantly. Even when we don’t make a choice, not choosing is itself, a choice.

Dreaming big matters. When we dream big, it forces us to step out of our comfort zone, it makes us uncomfortable because we are daring to go to a place we have never been to before. The unknown causes fear for most of us. Some people, however, the brave ones, dream big and when things get tough they get tougher.

What about change, though?  It voluntarily comes out of your consciousness, it comes from choice. If we apply this principle to changing old habits, we definitely put ourselves into a very uncomfortable situation. Isn’t that thrilling?

When I first dreamed of fulfilling my purpose by creating my own business and becoming an expert in brain and behavior through nutrition and the science of the mind, I never thought I would be so lucky to really do it one day!

I dreamed of working with wonderful clients, which I do

I dreamed of leading groups, which I do.

I dreamed of teaching one of my programs in community college, which I do.

I dreamed of networking with the smartest women in this country, which I do.

I dreamed of having the best team ever, which I do.

I dreamed of training professionals in becoming brain and behavior coaches, which I love doing more every day.

I dreamed of being a member of the council on suicide prevention on the county, which I am

I dreamed of working with veterans to give back to them, which I do with the Veterans Outreach Program.

I dreamed of working doing what I love everyday, which I do, I do, I do!

Dreams do come true if you never give up on them and for this reason I will keep dreaming big.

Dare to dream big, ignore what you were taught about dreaming, the power is yours.

Fear Not, Doubt Not

Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose our battle against fear.

Stress is nothing more than fear for the result we expect from a situation we are in or will be. Fear of being late, fear of not being worth it, fear of failing, fear of not being good enough, fear of not being lovable, fear of not being deserving. Why do most people get stressed from simple daily tasks related to relationships, careers, health, or money? The answer is very simple: we take everything personally when nothing actually is. We get attached to the payoff whether it is good or bad.

We tend to want to control everything around us. The reality is that most of the time circumstances and surroundings control us, otherwise we would never be stressed. This lack of control is the reason we get stressed in the first place.  Let me also introduce the idea to you of payoff.

Payoff is when we always get a little something out of negative or stressful situations. For example, we play the victim role, we get people to acknowledge us more, we draw attention to us in a positive or negative manner.

Now you can see the patterns that are created by repeating this cycle of stress. The payoff is the reason we get attached to the same stress repeatedly.

This situation is the reality of the majority of people in the world. They don’t own their life, they allow other people or surroundings to tell them how to live their life. The only thing that matters is YOU and what’s important to you, these should always go first. Take power in your life!

When We Think About Nourishing the Brain, We Can’t Do It Without Thinking in the Central Nervous System (CNS).

When We Think About Nourishing the Brain, We Can’t Do It Without Thinking in the Central Nervous System (CNS).

September 21, 2020

The CNS is what keeps everything moving, it’s what connects the brain to the rest of the body. Thanks to the CNS we can go from shaking to staying steady to even having goose bumps.

The CNS is divided in 2 systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system is the fight or fly system we experience every time we go into survival mode.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the one that kicks in when we are happy. What makes the CNS so intelligent is the fact that only one of these two systems can be active at any given time. Let’s break it down, shall we?

The Sympathetic nervous system is always alert, which it should be.

It is the primal nervous system. It is the one that helps us to survive when we are in extreme or life threatening situations.

It is the nervous system that kicks in when we are in danger even if we don’t realize it.

Today, this system gets activated  when our brain recognizes stress as survival. In this moment our brain sends the message to the CNS and the sympathetic nervous system gets into action, often for no major reason.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the one that gets activated when we do things that makes us happy, when we enjoy something.

This system kicks in when we feel loved or give love, when we hug our children, when we play and have fun, when we enjoy ourselves doing whatever brings peace and joy to our mind.

In today’s world we have to force ourselves to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Back in the day, the parasympathetic was the system that was always active unless men were hunting or were in danger.

There are things that we can do to bring up our parasympathetic nervous system throughout the day that will train our brain to not stay vigilant at all times.

  • Take 5 minutes break every hour.
  • Mindful breathing in your desk.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Practice gratitude, written or thought.
  • Take a 15 minutes walk during your lunch time.
  • Call your best friend to have an easy conversation.
  • Journal.
  • Meditate.
  • Hug your loved ones. Or the ones you don’t love so much.
  • Pet your pets.
  • Enjoy preparing a healthy meal.

Practice whatever brings joy, peace and happiness into your life as often as you can and enjoy!

Falling In Love With The Ideal

Falling in Love with the Ideal

Aug 18, 2020

How many times have you used the words ‘exactly’ or ‘perfect’ in a conversation?

What about the word ‘ideal’?

Usually, the ideal is used to describe the best result.

The use in this case is incorrect. The real meaning of “ideal” is the moment we really fall in love with an idea. For instance, it might have been the first time an idea enters your mind.

You created the idea out of nothing, it happened spontaneously and brought joy to you just by being in your thoughts.

This is the correct definition of the ideal, and here’s why it’s so important.  Why would I tell you this? Because I want you to know that everything is created twice.

At first, it exists as a thought and stays in this state until you manifest it as a physical thing.

First is created in your mind and when you take action is created physically. I created my ideal the day I adopted my daughter. Read her story here.

It is important to be aware. Remember that awareness is the opposite of ignorance and your mission is to awaken thousands of people, the more information you have the better you will fully help them as the Universe backs you up.

When the ideal happens in our mind for the first time, it is like a spark to start a fire, you have nothing and then all of a sudden a tiny spark starts a massive fire.

Metaphorically, the spark is the ideal, the fire is the burning desire, and if you don’t do something about it, it will keep burning until it consumes everything. It is impossible to ignore it.

Attracting Abundance in Your Life

Attracting Abundance in Your Life

Aug 11, 2020

Millions of people around the world have found the secret to a happy and successful life.  Why not you?

Abundance, it’s what we’re all searching for, but what is it?

Abundance is found in giving more than receiving.  Picture this, you enter a room full of people.

Colleagues, friends, and clients you meet are left with a profound feeling. You are adding value to their lives.

Not necessarily monetary value, but the overall feeling of increase.  It is commonly experienced simply as the desire for a more abundant life, more experiences, and richer ones, at that.

Transfer to others the impression of going forward with everything you do.  All people receive the idea that you are a successful person.  Give people you meet the message of increase by embodying the spirit of success.

Do everything with the firm belief that you are an advancing being, and that you carry with you the power to bring the same energy to others.  People will feel a sense of increase when they are in your presence, and they will be attracted to you.

If you always take honest pride in what you do, you will always have customers flocking to you.

If you are thinking in your mind, “fake it til you make it”, you have already lost this battle.  This isn’t what abundance means.  What you can reflect on is the following.

Think of a time in your recent life, when you were interacting with someone who didn’t quite understand how to do something.  You know in your mind exactly how to help them, what words to say, what steps to demonstrate, and you plan in your mind how you will help them.  Simultaneously, you have no thought of any means of payback, nor any means of being compensated for the help you will give.

This is the impression of increase.

Now you can understand exactly how you have left them with the experience of abundance.

A Turning Point, COVID-19 and Getting Back to Happy

A Turning Point, COVID-19 and Getting Back to Happy

Jun 17, 2020

March 2020 was a turning point.

“Stay at home, and only leave the house for essentials. No visitation of family or friends, and work from home if you can.”

Millions were fired or furloughed all over the world, millions of square feet of rental space were made vacant. Children were homeschooled, teachers began to teach from home. Therapists, coaches, and group sessions all went virtual.

Surgeries…better not need any serious medical treatment, as COVID-19 consumed the resources in hospitals.

Millions of people struggled to feed their families or keep their homes.

We all adapted to the environment with more or less ease.

Some people have had a harder time adjusting because they don’t know how to create a new environment for themselves. Many of us have built up some level of fear depending on our circumstances. One thing is for sure, all of us have developed some level of “hypervigilance” during this time, depending on the consequences experienced during this time and whether we eased into the new environment or collapsed into it. It’s true, people right now are calling themselves to be less happy than ever before, collectively, according to this data from the General Social Survey. This data has been collected annually since 1972.

Now let’s talk about Hypervigilance,  an effect of trauma that causes actual changes in the brain. Knowing if you have suffered trauma during this time is vital to address it before it turns into a more severe version of it. How can you know if you have suffered trauma during this time?  Read more about the Suppression of Emotions here.

Deflection by numbing

  • Drinking more than usual.
  • Eating comfort food.
  • Self-medicating with street drugs

Occupying your mind with something time-consuming

  • Watching TV or Social media for hours
  • Working on projects obsessively
  • Wronging others

Affected imagination

  • Not knowing how to be productive

Failure of imagination

  • No idea how to start over again
  • Incapacity to create a new project

Loss of mental flexibility

  • Single-sided thinking
  • Get into arguments easier

Reality distortion.

Body hypervigilant

If you check one or more of these boxes you have some level of trauma. Here are a few things you can do to tune down hypervigilance when it is not needed.

Re-connect to others having genuine conversations

  • Focus on today for a better tomorrow
  • Do NOT talk negatively about all that is wrong in the world
  • Inspire others to do their best thinking positively
  • Be selective about the people you choose to hang out with

Body experiences to contradict the trauma

  • Massage
  • Hugging loved ones
  • Exercise
  • Sex
  • Self-care in general

Keep your mind busy being productive

  • Have a well-organized schedule
  • Create a mastermind group with people alike to you
  • Ask someone you admire to be your mentor
  • Study something every day that inspires you
  • Take a certification course online like DNS

I trust you will consider the many ways that our programs and learning opportunities are here for you.  What sounds like a good place to start?

Taking an action step is the absolute best way to break free from feeling isolated.

Suppression of Emotions = Dis-ease

Suppression of Emotions = Dis-ease

Mar 14, 2020

Anxiety and Depression are created from suppression.

I really don’t like labels. My clients know, often when a new client comes to me with behavioral or mental issues often they start the conversation by saying “I have depression” “I have anxiety” or “I am depressed”. When I ask them if they are depressed now often the answer is “not right now but I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety”.

This kind of affirmation is very strong, I am not saying it wasn’t true at some point but if addressed appropriately anxiety and depression don’t need to be a for life diagnosis. Of course, people come to me because they want more from life, they know they can feel and do better than taking medication their entire life. They come to me because they are tired of being called “depressed” or “anxious”. They come to me when they are ready to do the work. Yes, I say work because it does require consistent action to change the really strong neural pathways that have been created for many years telling you “I can’t go there because I am sad” “I don’t feel like going to this meeting or this party” “I can’t seem to clear up my mind, I can’t even breathe!”. All these symptoms are real, very real, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change them. I have never been diagnosed with depression or anxiety, clinically, but I am positive I had both during different points of my life. I did search for solutions and help when it happened but I never bought into the fact that it is and it will always be that way, not even when I was extremely sick.

Depression and Anxiety come from suppression. Suppression of things we haven’t said, actions we couldn’t take, trauma we didn’t heal from, the grief we didn’t process when it was time. We bottle up because we have to look good on the outside, we need to work, we need to be good moms or dads, we need to perform in so many places and we have to do it to the best of our capacity. There is a pressure that we put on ourselves, there is lack of authentic conversations, there is a fear of being judged, there is guilt all over ourselves, there is shame, shyness, envy, jealousy, and isolation. All these unexpressed negative emotions that carefully we have kept inside for years rot our mind and body in a very subtle way. We kept them in because it would look awful on the outside.

Whatever it is for you or a loved one, know there is a solution to all this pain, you have all the tools within you but you need guidance. None can do everything by themselves! I certainly can’t and I won’t.

It’s good to know your options, talk to professionals that can help you but make sure you address the root of the problem, the cause of your depression and anxiety. Addressing depression and anxiety by itself is only addressing the symptoms, not the cause. Know that on the other side of pain there is freedom, it is not as difficult as you might think right now.

Talk to me, what do you have to lose? I will give you one hour of my undivided attention for one hour for free. It might change your life.

This Valentine’s Day, Know You Are Amazing: 5 Ways to Recognize This

This Valentine's Day, Know You Are Amazing: 5 Ways to Recognize This

Feb 14, 2020

We are all unique, there is no other you, only because of that we all should celebrate everyday because every day is unique it depends on you what you make of it.

Are you up for adventure and discovery of your amazing gifts? Let’s get into it.

  • Look at your face in a mirror and find one thing in your face you are especially proud of. You can’t say ‘nothing’ because I know it’s not true.
  • Write down your last good deed. I also know you are the kind of person that does good deeds without even thinking about it.
  • Now go in front of a full body mirror and point at least one thing of your body you like. It can be your brain but I want you to be generous with yourself.

I can see you are amazing inside out.

  • Do you have at least one really good friend, the kind of friend that it doesn’t matter how crappy you behave he/she still is in your side unconditionally.
  • Did you say “I love you” to someone today or yesterday? You can still have time, go and say it to someone you love.

Often we are harsh with ourselves in a way that no one else is. Can we all please be kind to ourselves and others? Thank you!

Look around you, with a lens of understanding that reveals how much our society forces negative comparisons upon us.  Have you been on social media, just to be presented with snapshots of how perfect everyone else’s life seems to be?

You can learn thought habits and retrain your brain by creating new neural pathways.
