Stress Hormones Run This Show

When we feel any kind of stress, for instance from being late to an event or from  being in a plane crash, the body releases cortisol. Cortisol is released by our adrenal system, which manages several hormones. It also manages epinephrine, which is the other major stress hormone. Every time the body releases cortisol in a minor stress situation, it is completely useless, yet it gives us a rush, a feeling of risk, fear, urge and later a crash. The more cortisol released, the less resilience our body has, and the more tired we are. As you can see, no good comes from that, but you already knew this.

What maybe you didn’t know is that all these daily small cortisol releases get trapped in our fatty and muscle tissues. They keep reminding our brain that there is cortisol in our body, creating something called “cortisol resistance”. Cortisol resistance is when our body can no longer distinguish if it is stressed or not because for our body “you are stressed since there is cortisol in your tissues.” The body simply feels the effects of stress all the time. Cortisol goes to work by weakening every organ and tissue in our body, it doesn’t leave anything out. The problem with stress or cortisol resistance is that often it appears as something else like anxiety, depression, or phobias. If you think you might be experiencing any of these symptoms, ask for help. We can’t do everything on our own.

Craving Sugar!

At an early age, we learn to cope by turning to food. We learn that when we are sad or stressed or fearful or anxious we can eat the food we desire and it calms us down. Everybody has different coping mechanisms, but coping with food is the most popular way of soothing ourselves emotionally.

This is how it works: We wait for the right time, the right food, the right environment, and the right people. We eat what makes us feel comfortable and safe. Often something sweet at night in front of the TV is a common way to cope.

Cravings are a response to the act of restricting something. Food often reflects our feelings about things such as an unsatisfactory career or love that is missing in our life. Why do we need to cope? Because we need to fill the emptiness inside ourselves. This is how the cravings work in your brain.

There is a small particle of the substance we use to cope attached to the tissues of your body, like the tongue, fatty tissue (including the brain) or muscle tissue.  This creates a memory in our brain. This memory reminds our brain that we want that specific food until we have it.  It is so persistent that you can’t resist until you have it!

How can we get rid of cravings? The most effective way to do it is by giving your brain everything it needs, especially fats. Watch this video to know what is that your brain really craves.

Remember that not all fats are equal.  Animal fats are very different from plant-based fats. If you need a review of the differences, read our blog here.

Hypothalamus Bitch

Hypothalamus Bitch

Nov 15, 2019

What the f*&.# is going on with my Hypothalamus? As strange as it may seem to you this was the first question that popped in my mind the day I start sweating in bursts. “Provably a lot” that was my quick answer.

If I a go back in time to 2006 when I had my brain broken due to stress, one of the side effects from the break down was my breasts started lactating, no like I had a baby but still lactating in a weird way…like lactating per se wasn’t weird enough, my “baby” was 11 years old at that time I was supposed to be as dry as it gets.

One of the hormones that the hypothalamus manages is prolactin. This is the hormone women need to make milk to breastfeed their babies. When you are not at that point and you start lactating the red flags are straight up but guess what? I did go to the doctor which told me “it’s probably nothing, maybe stress”. Well… Sir, yes I did have stress but I had not time to go further in the lactating investigation so I kept going and going and going until the day I wasn’t. Right now when I think about this and understanding how the different parts of our brain work, I can see my hypothalamus wasn’t going to make it easy with pre-menopause. Which by the way I didn’t see coming and I am mastering.

The hypothalamus is a small region in the base of our brain really close to the pituitary gland which supports. The hypothalamus is divided into three regions each one with a nucleus. These are clusters of neurons to perform vital functions such as release hormones. Oxytocin, reproductive hormones, thyroid-stimulating hormones, vasopressin which regulates water in the body and growth hormones. And those hormones manage vital functions in our body, some of them being:

       maintaining daily physiological cycles

  • regulating body temperature
  • controlling appetite
  • managing of sexual behavior
  • regulating emotional responses

When hypothalamus doesn’t function correctly because there is a head injury, excessive stress, menopause, genetic disorders, birth defects, tumors around it and  surgery involving the brain can cause the hypothalamus act up developing further complications such are:

  • Very high or low pressure
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Eating disorders
  • Infertility
  • insomnia
  • Short stature
  • Dehydration

To mention some of them.

If you pay attention to your life and read the list in this article, you will be able to identify when your hypothalamus was acting up by giving you a hard time. I had so many of these issues due to stress, brain breakdown, pre-menopause, weight loss and insomnia.

The good news is that you can improve and balance the hypothalamus function by eating and doing the right kind of routine.

Eating good fats helps with many things in our brain and healing and improving hypothalamus performance is one.

  • Flaxseed oil
  • Primrose oil
  • Fish oils
  • Olive oil
  • Tahini
  • Avocado
  • Nuts and seed

Ensuring fun in your life will make other parts of your brain release the happy hormones, dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin. By just doing the things you love.

  • Hug your loved ones
  • Time in nature
  • Paint
  • Read
  • Conversations with friends
  • Etc.

Sleep is a very important routine to keep healthy, I have written about it in our last newsletter, check out the post in our blog, https://www.nourishthebraininstitute.com/blog/sleep-better-tonight-3-must-do-things-that-will-knock-you-out-in-a-good-way

Avoid alcohol or drugs that would keep you away from having a good quality of sleep our brain needs the sleep time to restore the rest of our body, if there is no rest, restoration won’t happen effectively.

Happy hypothalamus, happy life!!

Sleep better tonight, 3 Must-Do things that will knock you out, in a good way

Sleep better tonight, 3 Must-Do things that will knock you out, in a good way

Sep 25, 2019

Hello friends,

I work with many clients whose first issue they seek help with is sleeping better.  We have conditioned ourselves with habits that are actually getting in the way of our brain’s natural needs, to steadily prepare for a good night’s rest.

Nights are designed to sleep. With all the technology interaction at night, our brain gets confused. While we are in front of a tv or laptop or phone our brain understands in daylight because the brain doesn’t know any better and stays wired keeping us awake until we turn screens off. Then the brain needs some time to realize that means sleep time by releasing melatonin to put our brain to sleep. Then the brain starts the cell restoration process and resting time. When we spend time in front of a tv, it is time we are shaving from restoring and resting causing all kinds of health issues or sleep deprivation. Under these circumstances our brain can function 100% the next day. Use these easy peasy technics to train your brain to be more effective while you are awake.

Lavender scrub

Make a mix with lavender essential oil and your favorite scrub. Use the scrub vigorously on your arms, chest, back, and face.

Cacao and Almond Milk

Warm, mix and drink 8-10 ounces of delicious and creamy almond milk with a tablespoon of cacao powder.  I use a milk frothing machine that warms and mixes as once, and it is always such a treat.  If you wish, you could heat on the stove and use a whisk just as easily.   Remember in GROUP we talk a lot about the power of cacao, and how it has the most natural magnesium of any food.  This will bring you to a most restful state before getting into bed.

Get off of your phone, unplug it all

Set a timer (a lot of phones have this feature) and stay true to your plan.  We must not give in to the excuses of needing to do just ‘one more thing’ in our day or check that Instagram one last time. It will be there tomorrow, I promise you!

Remember…

These changes that come from these routines are real, and with time they become so natural to you that you will wonder how you waited so long to make them.

Our Programs are here to Help you meet your goals, and if you are feeling like some extra guidance is what it takes, join a group class, get some 1:1 coaching, and treat yourself right.

Thank you and talk to you soon,

~Gemi

About Gemi Education The Brain

Cuesta College Nourishes Brains, too!

Cuesta College Nourishes Brains, too!

Aug 21, 2019

Hello Everyone~

One of the things that kept coming back to my mind when I had my brain health breakdown in 2006 was a question, of course, “Why doesn’t everyone know that you can put your brain back together with food, superfoods, and simple routines and structure?” When we as a society rely on food and natural remedies for a quick fix only, no wonder we fail.

With all my education and degrees, I never thought I would be teaching, and for the last 4 years, it has basically been what I do with my clients,  on different levels. From the Group Series to 1:1 and lately creating the new certification program Dynamic Nutrition Specialist, my mission in life is guiding my clients and students to discover this other world of health without depending on quick fixes. Our body is not Amazon Prime, results are not instant. It takes time to heal when you allow.

Teaching community college at Cuesta College made so much sense to me, the more people who hear the message of taking care of their brain/mind and body the better. Nourish the Brain education goes above and beyond what food can do for us, it teaches how to use your thoughts to your favor instead of against you, which is very common. We are a whole system, mind, and body, you can’t disregard either because then the system fails.

Do you want to learn how to fix it?

I will be teaching Nourish the Brain Level 1 Program. This program is designed to give the student a clear understanding of all the body functions with our choices, food, thoughts, and behaviors. Classes start on September 11th from 6 pm to 8 pm, every Tuesday for 6 weeks. I will be teaching and interacting with the students to help understand the areas they are stuck in and they want to change or go forward. Anyone interested in growing a bigger understanding of the body and the mind is welcome.

This series of lessons is a little different from others you may be familiar with.  Our meetings will be a little longer and therefore the structure will be streamlined to get more interaction and conversation within the group.  If you have never participated in a Group Series, you will feel thrilled a little bit to read the syllabus. These topics will shed new light on the most common misconceptions and the most relevant feelings you have about why you feel the way you do.  The stress we all experience can be managed with the correct information, and you deserve to bring yourself to the right environment to learn these things.

I want to leave you with this final thought on identity and attitude. Our name doesn’t define who we are, it is something we have. When I learned a very early age about the reason my parents chose my name, Gemi, it should have given me a clue about all the challenges I was going to face in life, my name was the first of many.

Watch Gemi in this short and fun video, and understand the reason why you’ve never met another Gemi.

Take the best care, my friends,

~ Gemi

Get Brain Superpowers Without Medication

Get Brain Superpowers Without Medication

Jun 04, 2018

Nowadays it becomes challenging to have a good amount of hours of sleep for a whole a lot of reasons such as we have TV to watch before bed and we get hooked up in our favorite show, we get in our phone or laptop for hours before bed time working or chatting in media platforms or playing with whatever game is on fashion.

All those things keep us awake during hours that we should be sleeping. Why is so hard to go the bed when you don’t feel sleepy at all? The reason is because your brain doesn’t understand that is time to go the bed because your eyes are facing an screen with powerful lights that tell your brain that is daylight.

Our brain is designed to feel sleepy when is dark and rise when is daylight. There is a very specific hormone that our brain releases when is dark and time to go the bed and wakes us up when is daylight, that hormone is called melatonin.

Melatonin is what tells us, it’s bed time! or Get up, get up!

For our brain to release the right amount of melatonin one thing it has to happen. Our brain needs to be off screens for at least 30 minutes previous bed time to receive the message to start releasing melatonin only then we feel sleepy so we can go ahead and go the bed in a reasonable time.
