Octobiotics

Octobiotics

Sep 29, 2018

Same symptoms, same medication, same scenario…is your body being treated like a production line instead of being treated for Optimal Health?

Shortly after I moved to the US, I began working as a business director in a behavioral practice. I was astonished at the number of patients that were taking prescribed medication (100% of those in the practice).  What was more disturbing was the fact that most patients were taking more than one prescribed medication, often 3 or 4 different medications. Most of this medication was given to counteract each other or side effects of the medication.

Coming from Europe, I had a hard time digesting this since my family had been using naturopathy, homeopathy or other alternative medicine for years. Working in a practice where patients and doctors didn’t see a way around prescribed medication was one of the reasons I decided to go back to my origins and move to a holistic approach for my clients.

Recently, several new clients have turned to me for alternatives to traditional medicine, which wasn’t working for them. The horror stories they have told me, not only infuriated me but also made me realize that I could address these topics in my monthly articles.

“Octobiotics”

This month I am focusing on antibiotics. In the last few weeks, I have had 3 new clients who had UTI’s and were prescribed antibiotics for over a year and a half, one of them for 2 years.

Same symptoms, same medication, same scenario, different doctors, different patients.

In all 3 cases, these patients were diagnosed with a UTI and their doctors started them on a series of antibiotics for a week and told it should be done if there weren’t further problems. No explanation about UTI or the possible causes, no alternative options, just “take an antibiotic for this” period. A couple weeks later, these clients went back to their doctors because they still had UTI symptoms and again, they were prescribed another round of antibiotics. This pattern continued for over a year and a half and two years with the 3 of them.

These clients came to me from different channels and for different reasons but all three let me know that they had been fighting a UTI for some time. I am always very cautious making quick assessments or having an opinion about other professionals but this is getting out of hand.

I am not saying that all doctors are the same. There are wonderful, amazing devoted professionals in the healthcare system that have the humility and capacity to ask for a second opinion when something is not working.

Antibiotics are useful or necessary when there is a serious infection that can’t be treated with anything else, such as meningitis or others with the same aggressive behavior, bacterial or viral as these can be fatal.

A UTI is not fatal. It can be treated with natural remedies that act faster and are more effective without any harmful side effects. When we do this quite often we achieve Optimal Health rather than destroying the immune system.  The same cannot be said about antibiotics.

The regular intake of antibiotics causes different problems in the body:

  •       They stop being effective.
  •       The body loses the capacity to fight any kind of infection
  •       The body becomes resistant to antibiotics to the point that antibiotics are no longer effective if needed in the future for a more serious infection.
  •       Antibiotics destroy all bacteria in our gut causing all kind of digestive problems and creating an environment prone to fungus and yeast infections in other areas of our body.

The bottom line is this: if you go to the doctor for a mild problem and your doctor prescribes more than one round of antibiotics in a short period of time, please seek a second option before you start on a second round of antibiotics. Very often, nature provides us with the solutions we need for our problems.

In the cases of these clients, I suggested 2 different remedies to overcome their UTIs. All 3 of them showed improvement within 24 hours and they each emailed or messaged me to tell me how much better they were feeling after only 24 hours of a different approach. We are now working in rebuilding their immune systems and restoring the gut which won’t take long because their body was eager for something good and natural.

Inflammation Part 2

Inflammation Part 2

Aug 23, 2018

Last month, I shared what inflammation is. This month, I want to talk about what causes it and how to reduce it.

There are a few well-known foods that cause inflammation:

  • Sugar
  • Dairy
  • Gluten
  • Corn
  • Soy
  • Alcohol
  • Eggs

Keep in mind that not all of these foods affect everyone the same way. This is where inflammation gets tricky.

As I mentioned last month, feeling bloated is a sign of the beginning stages of inflammation. There are other symptoms as well, including:

  • Skin rash
  • Itchiness
  • Hot flashes
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling anxious
  • Mood swings
  • Sleepiness
  • Brain fog
  • Lack of energy

Paying close attention to how your body reacts after eating certain type of foods is crucial to identifying if you have sensitivity to them.  Keep track of what you eat and any symptoms you experience. If you experience any of the above symptoms, it means there is some level of sensitivity and a potential inflammation problem.

In addition to food reactions, one of the most common inflammatory products is one that our bodies produce. It is a hormone called “Cortisol”, which many of you are familiar with. .

Cortisol is a very powerful hormone that gets released by the adrenal glands when we are in survival mode which happens on a daily basis.  It’s what we call “Stress”.  This hormone gets released often throughout our body during the day, any time we go to survival mode. Cortisol causes all kind of problems, from a vulnerable immune system, auto-immune diseases, cancer, being overweight, heart attacks and stroke, you name it.

If you feel you are struggling with stress and need tools to go back to your center and regain your power, don’t hesitate to email or call me for more personal advice. Below are some tools you can start using today to fight stress wherever you are.  Practice the things that make you happy as often as you can:

  • Call your BFF to vent
  • Kiss or hug your loved ones
  • Paint
  • Write
  • Sew
  • Sing
  • Dance
  • Exercise
  • Meditate (that’s my go-to)
  • Walk in nature (that’s my favorite)
  • Take a 15 minute nap

Doing these simple things will activate your parasympathetic nervous system which will help deactivate the sympathetic nervous system which is the nervous system that gets active when we are in survival mode or stress.  Use these tools on a daily basis to turn off the switch to stress.

Roasted Beet Salad

Roasted Beet Salad

Aug 13, 2018

ROASTED BEETS SALAD

For the Beets

1 bunch medium beets (about 3)

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

For the Salad

10 ounces mixed greens (I like a blend of frisée, radicchio and mesclun)

3 ounces goat cheese

1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped

For the Vinaigrette

2 tablespoons honey

1-1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1-1/2 tablespoons minced shallots

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

6 tablespoons vegetable oil

Drizzle the beets with olive oil and wrap them up in aluminum foil. Roast them directly on the oven rack for about an hour. You’ll know they’re done when you can easily pierce them with a knife.

Let them cool, then peel the skin and cut into chunks. You can wear gloves if you want to prevent your hands from turning temporarily pink but I never bother.

The rest of the salad is a breeze. For the vinaigrette, combine the honey, Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, oil, shallots, salt and pepper in a jar and shake to emulsify.

When you’re ready to serve, toss the greens with the dressing. Divide the salad onto plates, then sprinkle with goat cheese, walnuts and beets.

Inflammation Natural Remedies

Inflammation Part 1

Inflammation Part 1

Jul 24, 2018

We frequently hear the word “inflammation.” Do we really know what it means?

Often, we don’t.

We have an overall idea, but we can’t picture it inside our body because the type of inflammation we see it’s usually on our skin. Beyond that, we label it with another name or diagnosis.

Inflammation starts in an specific area of your body. It gets irritated, at first, due to external or internal agents causing  swelling in that part, redness, irritability and in some cases mucus or bleeding, depending where the inflammation takes place.

Every imbalance, illness, or unusual sensation in our body belongs to an inflammatory response. Inflammation is the way our body is telling us, “I am getting sick, take care of me.”

We do not “listen” what our body has to say for different reasons, here are some:

  • We are busy.
  • We are disconnected from our nature
  • We assume being uncomfortable is normal.
  • We can even make pain into a way of living just because we get used to it.

I truly believe our body is designed to function at ultimate health on its own, we just get in the way. How?

Well, we have a particular way of doing basic things unnaturally:

  • The way we are eating.
  • Sleeping deprivation.
  • Negative thinking.
  • Spend more hours facing a screen than anything else.
  • Over-medicating.
  • Breathing polluted air.
  • Using chemicals on our skin.
  • …and the worse of all, we live in constant stress.

We ignore the signals our body sends such, for example:

We eat something, let’s say pizza and we feel bloated, uncomfortable and the digestion takes hours to process. We even have to undo our pants button. In spite of all of that most, certainly we will eat pizza again and again…

That state is inflammation. Being bloated is not normal or good. That is the first sign we need to listen, our body is not happy with pizza!

If we persist with eating pizza, most likely the bloating will turn persistent. That is inflammation.

Inflammation causes all kind of unbalances and problems in our gut causing very unpleasant side effects such as:

  • We gain weight
  • We get gassy
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation

Learning how to listen to our body is very important.

Our body is a perfect machine that is capable of performing at very high levels when it’s well taken care of…or absolutely the opposite when not. Your choice, what’s going to be for you?

Stay tuned next month for more about inflammation. What causes it? How can you reduce it?

Your Intention Is As Important As Your Actions

Your Intention Is As Important As Your Actions

Jun 21, 2018

Have you ever stopped to observe the bite in your fork right before you put it in your mouth?

What are the colors, the convention of foods, the layers, the smell?
Then, the texture in your mouth, the flavors of all different foods.
How that will fill your body and soul? What are the nutrients that contented?

All these question may seem silly or boring but this exercise makes a total difference in the experience of eating.

When I first moved definitely here in California, I was amazed that people weren’t sitting to eat their meal. They ate in the car, on the way or even in the restaurant, it was eating and leaving, and it seemed really fast to me.

I wasn’t used to that, we sat in the table, all together, we ate and talk and share, laugh or had discussions. It was a slow fun tasteful experience 3 times a day! Can you believe that?

Now, I am Americanized.
Although I won’t eat in the car or on the go but meals are not the same, foremost because here I don’t have that many of my people. But experience of eating a meal is still the same, I stop and prepare my meals, I love what I eat and what I do. I don’t want to miss a bit of any experience, even when is a small one.

I am present, I know what I want to eat, is well thought in advance, it makes me happy and I know my body will be happy too, it will make my body stronger and healthier, it will nourish my brain, it will give me peace and comfort.

I pay attention every step on the way and I try to do that with everything, with every conversation, every look, every second. I don’t want to miss it, not a single one.
Although many times I do, I miss it or I forget something or I made a mistake. Of course! I am human as everyone else, but I always put intention in what I do or eat.

Do something with intention means that you do it for a reason, whatever that is. You gave a thought before you did it or ate it, that way, the experience is highly rewarding. Also at the end of the day, you will have a feeling of achievement instead of exhaustion and being defeated.

My suggestion, think before you do or eat or talk, put an intention to your meals or doings, it will give more value and you will be more present with every living experience.

Push the Envelope in Order to Grow

Push the Envelope in Order to Grow

Jun 21, 2018

We like being comfortable, when we are not, we tend to say that “life is difficult”.
There are so many levels of that sentence, everyone has a bar with his or her own level of difficulty in life, some people can take a lot, some people don’t have the strength or resilience.

I remember something that my grandma used to say, “I don’t want everything I can take, because I can take a lot!”.
Human beings are extraordinary! we can do all sort of things and every day we get better, smarter, stronger, faster, taller,….

We evolve constantly and we don’t even take the time to acknowledge ourselves when we do it or often, we don’t even notice it.

When we grow things get tricky and uncomfortable for a while. Often we think, that “everything comes at once”, “why everything seems so difficult?”.
Those are questions that often arise when we are making changes in life for the reason of getting ourselves in a better position.

Then for after a period where everything feels tight and uncomfortable, everything goes back to normal and we are more comfortable in our own skin.
And the cycle starts again when we need to grow or experiment with new things for ourselves.

I know we all have lived through that type of cycles over and over. Often we are not aware of the growth, we just see life as a fight instead of an adventure that is totally wonderful and worth it. Other times we don’t stop to think anything, we just “keep swimming”.

My suggestion to everyone is, make yourself uncomfortable, growing is great!
You get to know things that you would never do otherwise, we will meet interesting people.
You will get healthier, wiser, faster and smarter.

Challenge yourself every single day in little things that you do as, increasing the weights on the gym, park your car 2 blocks away from your workplace, say “I love you” to someone that you are secretly in love with,….whatever it is for you.

Life is a precious gift and it has a huge wrap for you to unwrap!

Your Body is Designed to Function at Optimum Health On It’s Own

Jun 21, 2018

We all have heard about inflammation but often we are not clear of, what it is or how that can be a problem for us our health?

Every health issue that we may have or had, started with an inflammatory process, except for the accidents.
Most of the time it starts in our gut and because we can’t feel it in the beginning, we keep doing or eating what it will become a problem in the future for us.

We all heard about sensitivities, we are not allergic to something but often when we eat that specific thing causes some symptoms in our body that makes us feel uncomfortable.
When you feel bloated after eating certain foods or stomach pain after eating others.
Our joints are sore, we have trouble focusing or we simply feel sick.

Inflammation is a subtle thing, is a silence beast that when you notice it is because it took over you and you are already having problems.

The most common foods that cause inflammation are:

*Wheat
*Dairy
*Sugar
*Corn
*Soy

There are more but is all about you and how you listen to your body of what is good or not for yourself, specifically.
When we feel that there is some food that makes us feel uncomfortable it means, that is not good for our body.
Then, we can still choose eating it but if we are aware of it, we most likely will try to avoid and at the end quitting it completely.

Now there are some things that we can eat to balance or heal inflammation:

*All greens and leafy greens
*Turmeric or the orange colored foods as, sweet potato, carrots, beets…..

Add one of those foods once a day in your diet and you will be doing good for your body fighting inflammation because your body is designed to function well, sometimes it needs a little help from you!
