Stress Hormones Run This Show

When we feel any kind of stress, for instance from being late to an event or from  being in a plane crash, the body releases cortisol. Cortisol is released by our adrenal system, which manages several hormones. It also manages epinephrine, which is the other major stress hormone. Every time the body releases cortisol in a minor stress situation, it is completely useless, yet it gives us a rush, a feeling of risk, fear, urge and later a crash. The more cortisol released, the less resilience our body has, and the more tired we are. As you can see, no good comes from that, but you already knew this.

What maybe you didn’t know is that all these daily small cortisol releases get trapped in our fatty and muscle tissues. They keep reminding our brain that there is cortisol in our body, creating something called “cortisol resistance”. Cortisol resistance is when our body can no longer distinguish if it is stressed or not because for our body “you are stressed since there is cortisol in your tissues.” The body simply feels the effects of stress all the time. Cortisol goes to work by weakening every organ and tissue in our body, it doesn’t leave anything out. The problem with stress or cortisol resistance is that often it appears as something else like anxiety, depression, or phobias. If you think you might be experiencing any of these symptoms, ask for help. We can’t do everything on our own.

Eating Habits Are Created In Our Brain

Habits and cravings are very powerful, which is why creating healthy eating habits from the start is crucial. Eating habits are merely a result of repetition. By doing something over and over again, it becomes ingrained into our brain and therefore becomes a norm.

Put in other words, a habit is a creation of various strong connections. We need several connections to create a habit.

It works like a puzzle. Often when we talk about eating habits we associate them as being unhealthy habits, which is not always correct. Habits, whether they are good or bad, are formed in the same way—through repetition. 

From a very early age, our brain is able to make easier and faster connections when there is an emotion involved. These experiences, whether positive or a negative, lead us to create goals. If we have an experience with a positive connection we want to feel that repeatedly. 

Saturdays were my favorite days because they were the only day of the week when my dad stayed home. We played in the small pool he built us, we talked about everything, we watched tv, and at the end of the day, after our weekly shower, my brother and I raced the big couch cushions up and down the hallway and my dad was the referee. Happy memory + Healthy habit.

Creating a healthy habit works in the same way. If we see the new habit, embody the new habit, and create the emotional connection with the new habit.

Practice exercise.

  • Think about one habit you want to change.
  • Write the new habit down in a post-it note and hang it on your fridge.
  • While practicing the habit for the first time, think the whole time of a happy memory.
  • Your mind needs to feel that you are enjoying the new habit. Make sure it happens during a relaxing time for you.
  • Repeat for one week.

Even the most challenging habit will turn into fun if you tricked your brain into having joy during practice.

How Much Oxygen Does My Brain Need?

When we arrive in this world, the first thing that we do is gasp for air.

As we grow into adults and life gets busier and more stressful, pollution and artificially created O2 make the air we breathe not optimal for our bodies. 

Thanks to plant-based sources, we can add oxygen to our body through our diet to increase the quality of oxygen in our blood and strengthen our immune system. What does this mean?

The oxygen on an airplane is artificially made, therefore during a flight we are prone to jet-lag, dehydration and headaches. 

One of the best places to get quality air is from the outdoors. In nature we can breath better, we are more awake and alert, and therefore, we are happier. All of that happens because the quality of oxygen is much better when we are not confined to small spaces. 

To increase and improve the quality and the quantity of oxygen in our blood we need good amounts of chlorophyll. Leafy greens carry lots of oxygen in them, the darker the better. Kale is the best of all.

Some superfoods bring your oxygen levels up. Microalgaes such as Chlorella adds oxygen to our bloodstream, which spreads through our body and  brain, keeping us safe from all those bad side effects mentioned earlier.

Not only is adding oxygen to your daily life important, consider adding structure, or things to do during the day.  Humans are prone to develop mental issues such as negative thinking, depression and compulsive behaviors or anxiety without routines.

Three things need to happen to create a new healthy routine.

  • Make a committed decision about what you want to change.  
  • Plan what it is, in writing, this makes it more real, and helps you stay accountable.
  • Take consistent action towards it. Your actions can be small, but they need to be intentional.

When we create a new healthy habit it takes time to get used to it. Don’t be discouraged if you miss one or two, three or more days, it will catch on. Catch yourself and go back to the new routine as soon as you stray from it.  Our brain only learns by repetition. Remember when you were a baby and learned how to walk, you fell so many times but you didn’t get discouraged. You got up and tried again. This is how your brain works. You might fall off but you go back on track as soon as you catch yourself, repeat daily until it sticks.

Feeding Your Brain the Best

How can we best feed our brain to get the most out of it? The answer is by eating sufficient fats, protein, antioxidants, carbs, minerals, and vitamins. But how much of each? Our brain is 90% fat. Therefore, our consumption of fat is crucial to a healthy brain and is what allows our brain to stay fresh, soft, and happy. 

When you think of fat, what food did you picture in your mind? 

 

I want to encourage you to think about good plant-based fats such as:

* Coconut oil 

* Olive oil.

* Avocado.

* Flaxseed oil.

These are the fats your brain thrives off of. 

There is only one animal fat that does make the list of good fats, can you guess what it is?

The animal fat we’re looking for is cold-pressed cod liver oil. 

 

Protein.

 To our brain and body, protein is protein. What matters really is the amount we have in every meal. A good amount of protein would be the size of the palm of your hand, a larger hand, a larger amount of protein. 

 

Minerals.

Look for magnesium!  We can find magnesium in cacao. Raw cacao powder is an amazing source of magnesium.

Cacao …

  • is healthy and tasty
  • strengthens our central nervous system
  • calms down our brain because it has tryptophan
  • increases the number of neurotransmitters in our brain, helping us to stay on task and focused

 

Vitamins.

D

  • cod liver oil and krill oil

C

  • prevents our cells from oxidation, helping our cells stay younger longer

B

  • straight brain food: buckwheat, quinoa, avocado, broccoli

E

  • fats prevent inflammation and heart disease. 
  • Essential oils have lots of this



Water.

Water keeps the brain soft and flexible, which is vital for the neuroplasticity of our brain. Neuroplasticity is the capacity of the brain to recover from almost any damage.

 

Movement.

Exercise mindfully helps to keep a positive mindset and healthy routine.

 

Zzzzz.

The last but not the less is a good night of sleep. Our brain and body need good rest, 8 hours is ideal. Go to bed before 10pm to ensure cell renewal and restoring time.

5 False Beliefs About A Cleanse

Hi Everyone,

 

My name is Emily and I need to share this experience with you.

So, when I told people in my life that I was going to do a cleanse, many eyebrows lifted.  Some of the first reactions to hearing about a cleanse were frightening and acutely misinformed, and so, because of this, I decided to write about my cleanse. Also, to address some of the misconceptions about the process!

 

Let’s break down some of the top 5 misunderstandings about this cleanse.  Keep in mind, this doesn’t apply to all plans and remedies that are out there, but the guided, safe routine 10-day cleanse outlined by Nourish the Brain Institute.

 

Number One: Going to the bathroom.  This has got to win first place for the number of comments I heard when discussing the cleanse.  It is not true that being on a specific diet causes one to ‘clear their bowels’ in a rapid, unpredictable, radical way. Do people really do this type of thing to themselves?! My experience was quite neutral in fact, and here is why. The cleanse does not replace all foods with a liquid diet or an extreme increase in any one herb, or element.  I ate a specific vegetarian diet of delicious steamed or stir-fried veggies, which, as you can imagine, really supported regularity!

 

Number Two:  Hmm. Perhaps the last one should have been listed as number two. Oh well. Let’s talk about feeling hungry.  No one likes that, right? I have never been successful on a restricted diet. Those types of plans fail because they tell our brain that we are suffering, which in turn creates more feelings of hunger, stress, and a sense of urgency to eat more when we finally get the chance to.  This doesn’t happen on the cleanse and here is why. You can eat an entire avocado and a delicious apple any way you want each day. The cleanse also allows you unlimited amounts of cucumber and celery, all throughout the day as well. The high-fiber, vitamins and minerals are digested slowly by your body, allowing you to continue to feel satisfied.  There are also amazing shakes as part of the daily routine. As it turns out, you never go more than a couple of hours without a treat.

 

Number Three: Fatigue. Won’t I be lacking in energy without all my pasta, bread, and other sources of protein? In short, Not really. Along with the daily plan of veggies, and the shakes, there are protein supplements, tablets, that are taken 2 times a day. Your body is not deprived of anything that it needs to function as it has been designed to. Now hold on, should you go and run a 5K during your cleanse? Should you cleanse in the week of your sister’s wedding? Yeah, don’t do that.  

 

Number Four:  Mindset. The cleanse is intended to reset your body, back to optimum health.  The process, for me at least, required some thoughtful rest during days 3 and 4.  I had to give myself a pass on stressful events, physical, mental and emotional. The tradeoff of experiencing the first few days of the transition is that I began to think more clearly, sleep better, and experienced an overall euphoria that proved the cleanse was making a difference.  Most of all, by days 7 – 10, the sense of accomplishment was growing rapidly. This even continued well after the cleanse was over, and reason five will help me say more…

 

Number Five: Weight Loss  Our bodies carry extra weight because we store toxins, fats, and sugars that are introduced into our system.  Through the cleanse, we remove the addition of these unneeded ‘food additives’ and show our body that pure health is possible.  I started losing a pound, maybe a little less, each couple of days. Everyone’s body is going to change in its own way. Here’s the surprising thing though.  After I stopped the cleanse I continued to lose 3 – 4 more pounds over the next month, which I thought was pretty cool!

I am definitely planning to cleanse again and to repeat about every six months because I simply love its rejuvenating effects.  Do I eat vegetarian, inflammation-free all the time? Absolutely not. I love wine, cheese, burgers and yes, even the occasional bacon. I haven’t craved coffee, cocktails, cookies in quite the same way I did before the cleanse.  You might say, I have begun to retrain my brain. We are all unique, there is no other you, only because of that we all should celebrate everyday because every day is unique it depends on you what you make of it.

Are you up for adventure and discovery of your amazing gifts? Let’s get into it.

  • Look at your face in a mirror and find one thing in your face you are especially proud of. You can’t say ‘nothing’ because I know it’s not true.
  • Write down your last good deed. I also know you are the kind of person that does good deeds without even thinking about it. 
  • Now go in front of a full body mirror and point at least one thing of your body you like. It can be your brain but I want you to be generous with yourself. 

           I can see you are amazing inside out.

  • Do you have at least one really good friend, the kind of friend that it doesn’t matter how crappy you behave he/she still is in your side unconditionally.
  • Did you say “I love you” to someone today or yesterday? You can still have time, go and say it to someone you love.

Often we are harsh with ourselves in a way that no one else is. Can we all please be kind to ourselves and others? Thank you!

Webinars are another simple way to listen in on something you might have already heard before from Gemi, but it bears repeating.  Gemi walks us through the role of fats, sugar, and inflammatory foods and how they are constantly affecting our organs and nervous system.  Invite a friend who may be struggling with stress, fatigue, and other negative feelings, but might not be aware of their cause.

Our body is a magnificent engineered machine.We put our body through all kinds of tests, and it usually passes them all with flying colors. From eating processed foods loaded with chemicals, drinking sodas or alcohol, refined sugars, smoking cigarettes, legal/illegal drugs, etc…

If we stop doing all this things our body knows how to get rid of all of it with barely any complaints…well sometimes it lets us know is unhappy by causing discomfort but nothing we didn’t deserve for doing what we have done to it.
What amazes me the most is the capacity our body has to recover, restore, replenish and go back to normal. In fact that’s one of the brain’s jobs. Our brain is the one that by sending the right signals through the central nervous system tells every part of the body how to go back to normal. If our brain doesn’t work, nothing works effectively. 
I want you think about when people are brain dead in the hospital, they need a machine for every organ to make them function because they can’t if the brain doesn’t tell them what to do every moment. People with brain death need a machine for breathing, dialysis for the kidneys, ventilation, feeding tub, heart pump, all kind of fluids to keep the fluids moving, etc.
